Flowers are beautiful to look at and they enable the plant to reproduce. Year 8 students in science class recently investigated the intricate details of an Oriental Lily by dissecting a flower. They carefully observed, described and sketched the various parts. With the help of microscopes, they were able to see pollen grains that looked like rice.  The sticky stigma was covered with pollen transferred from the anthers. Clear ova (eggs), invisible to the naked eye, lined the inside folds of the ovary. Check out the picture of an ova covered in pollen on the tip of a pin below.

In Luke 12:27, Jesus said, “Consider how the lilies grow. They don’t work or spin yarn, but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was clothed like one of them.” The detail in a single flower is fascinating. Next time you look at a flower, think of how much more incredible it is that God loves and cares for each one of us.
