Year 12 Biology Trip – Hastings Point

Friday, 27/04/2018 Posted by: Marketing

In the first week of Term 2, the Year 12 Biology students attended an overnight field trip to Hastings Point, NSW. On this field trip, we studied Hasting Point’s biologically diverse environments, including sand dunes, rocky shores, and mangroves. Upon arrival, we sat down and had an amazing lunch, followed by learning about the succession on sand dunes. A few students took special interest on ghost crabs on the sand dunes, before proceeding into the canopy behind the dunes.  Delving into research in the rocky shores, the majority of the class went snorkelling, exploring the underwater habitat and its vital organisms. Several students saw interesting sea creatures, including a Wobbegong shark, some being touched by it, as well as discovering an octopus and many other intriguing specimens. The day was finished with dinner and a TED talk, and then all weary campers went to bed. Day 2 included an amazing breakfast buffet, which was followed by a kayaking session along the magnificent mangroves. We learned about the special adaptations of mangroves and their strange habitat as well as the animals’ adaptations to make mangroves their habitat. We also understood and noted human impact on mangroves.  Later lunch was served, and then we had a quick recap of the camp, and proceeded to head home. Overall, this camp was a fulfilling and interesting experience, filled with memories and information. This camp was a blessing to attend.
