Drama
The Drama curriculum at Northpine Christian College provides students with the opportunity to actively participate in an intellectual and emotional experience that offers a unique means of enquiry which contributes to knowing and understanding themselves and the world.

Our College understands that Drama, like all art forms, has the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, as well as excite the imagination and encourage students to reach their creative and expressive potential. Drama enables students to imagine and participate in exploration of their worlds, individually and collaboratively. Students actively use body, gesture, movement, voice and language, taking on roles to explore and depict real and imagined worlds. They create, rehearse, perform and respond using the elements and conventions of drama and emerging and existing technologies available to them.

Our students are encouraged to explore their imagination by taking risks in storytelling through role and dramatic action. Students develop a sense of inquiry and empathy by exploring the diversity of drama in the contemporary world and in other times, traditions, places and cultures.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Middle School Drama Program is designed to nurture students’ love of drama and foster enthusiasm by developing their skills through a variety of styles. Year 7 students learn to deeply study and appreciate theatre styles from other cultures and the way the elements of drama are used similarly and differently.

In Year 8, students are introduced to the forms and styles of drama that can be used in Children’s Theatre. They learn how to research, select and refine suitable material for Children’s Theatre, and devise their own play script for performance, applying the elements of drama and performance skills.

In Year 9, students study the various types of comedy, with a focus on Physical Comedy, and devise routines through improvisation and workshopping.

Senior School

The Year 10 Drama Program prepares Northpine students for the senior pathway of Drama. An emphasis is placed on students developing their forming and performance skills, as well as gaining a solid understanding of the elements of drama. Students’ ability to respond to drama works is also developed as an integral part of refining their drama making.

Students expand on their understanding of physical comedy through a focus on the ancient style of Commedia dell’Arte. Students then develop an appreciation for Asian forms of theatre and undergo Suzuki method actor training to prepare them for a physical theatre interpretation of an Elizabethan text.

The Senior Drama Program is designed for students who have a love for drama and can demonstrate capability in the areas of forming, presenting and responding to drama.

In Year 11 and 12, students develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in the styles of Realism, Verbatim, Physical Theatre, Australian Realism and Political Theatre. The skills and conventions of these forms and styles are practised and honed through the lens of actor (presenting), director and playwright (forming), and drama critic (responding). Students explore the historical, geographical and cultural contexts underpinning selected play scripts, and examine and experiment with the theories and dramatic languages employed by drama practitioners.

Students perform individually and in groups, with assessment items performed in both classroom environments and at performance events with a live audience. Students are mentored to achieve their very best in all areas of Senior Drama.
